1. You expect everything to happen NOW.

In America, we’re used to same-day delivery, instant answers, appointments tomorrow and customer service solving problems immediately.

In Spain? Not necessarily. Bureaucracy, repairs, paperwork and appointments can take time. Spain generally operates at a different pace.

If “Why isn’t this done yet?” is part of your vocabulary, Spain may test you.

2. You live to work.

If your identity is wrapped up in your career, your salary, your title and working 60 hours a week…

Spain might drive you crazy.

Life here tends to put considerably more emphasis on family, friends, meals, leisure and actually enjoying your time away from work.

In Spain, being busy isn’t necessarily a status symbol.

3. You need everything to be convenient.

Amazon. Drive-throughs. Huge parking lots. 24-hour stores. Endless choices. Someone answering the phone immediately.

Spain can feel downright inconvenient by comparison.

You can absolutely get by with English in many tourist areas and international cities.

The things that frustrate Americans about Spain are often the exact same things Americans eventually fall in love with.

So maybe the real question isn’t:

“Is Spain right for me?”

“Am I willing to change my expectations?”

That is often the difference between an American who lives in Spain and an American who is simply an American living in Spain.
