If you’re relocating to Spain, one of the first administrative tasks you’ll need to complete is your empadronamiento (registration on the Padrón Municipal). While many newcomers confuse it with residency, they’re actually two very different things.

The padrón is your municipality’s official register of residents. It serves as proof of where you live and is used by local, regional, and national government agencies for a wide range of services.

Once you’re registered, your empadronamiento can be required for:

If you move—whether to a new address in the same city or to a different municipality—you should update your empadronamiento to keep your records current.
