š¶š Great News for Dog Owners in Spain! Renfe Expands Travel for Larger Dogs Starting 21 July 2026

Traveling across Spain with your four-legged family member is about to get much easier!
Beginning 21 July 2026, Renfe will allow dogs weighing up to 40 kg (88 lbs) to travel on its commercial train services, making it possible for many more pet owners to enjoy rail travel together.
š Eligible Train Services
The new policy applies to Renfeās commercial and public-service trains, including:
* AVE
* Avlo
* Alvia
* Euromed
* Intercity
* Avant
* Media Distancia
š Conditions for Traveling with Your Dog
To ensure a safe and comfortable journey for everyone, the following rules apply:
š¾ Dogs must travel in the designated pet-friendly carriage.
š¾ Dogs must remain on a non-extendable leash no longer than 1.5 metres (5 feet) at all times.
š¾ Dogs must wear a muzzle while in stations and when boarding or leaving the train.
š¾ Dogs should remain next to their owner by the window seat throughout the journey.
š Owners Must Bring
Be sure to have the following with you:
ā An up-to-date vaccination record.
ā A valid European Pet Passport (where required).
ā A pet cleaning kit, including:
* Absorbent pads
* Waste bags
* Cleaning wipes
* Disinfectant spray
* Odor neutralizer
ā¹ļø Additional Important Information
⢠A maximum of two large dogs will be permitted on each train.
⢠Most commercial services will require a ā¬40 supplement for the dog.
⢠Dogs must generally be at least one year old to travel under this program.
⢠Certain restrictions apply, including dogs in heat and some legally restricted breeds.
This is a significant step forward for pet-friendly travel in Spain and excellent news for owners of medium and large dogs who previously had limited options for rail travel.
